Urgent warning to dog owners as tainted treats are recalled across America

An urgent warning has been issued to dog owners about dog treats that could be contaminated with salmonella.

The Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority announced that Carolina Prime Pet Inc. has recalled bags of dog treats in 19 states.

The North Carolina company initiated the recall of 400 of its “Hollywood Feed Carolina Made Chicken Chips” 16-ounce treats on Nov. 22.

The treats were sold from Hollywood Feed stores in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas.

They were also available through the company’s website.

The problem was noticed after third-party laboratory testing identified the contamination.

Currently no illnesses have been reported. But if a pet owner thinks their dog has eaten the treats, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration advises owners to contact their veterinarian.

Salmonella has the potential to affect both pets through consumption and humans through handling contaminated products – especially with improper hand washing or cleaning of surfaces.

Pets infected with salmonella may become lethargic and develop diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting.

Some pets only have a loss of appetite, fever and abdominal pain.

Pets are also at risk of carrying the infection and spreading it to other animals or people.

Healthy people infected with salmonella may experience one or more of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever.

Salmonella infections can rarely become more serious and result in arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation and urinary tract symptoms.

If someone experiences any of these symptoms, they should contact their healthcare provider.
