An urgent search is underway for a father and son believed to have been washed off rocks at a popular fishing spot.
The 47-year-old man and his 17-year-old son were last seen around 5.30pm on Monday evening after travelling to Storm Bay, south of the Kiama Blowhole on the New South Wales south coast, at 5pm.
They had travelled from Liverpool to the well-known fishing spot and had to be home by midnight.
The couple’s car was found on a rock ledge along with fishing gear and their belongings.
“We are very concerned for their safety,” New South Wales Police Chief Craig Ireland said in a statement to the Illawarra Mercury.
“The conditions are quite tough today,” said Supt Ireland.
The search involves officers from the Lake Illawarra Police District, Marine Area Command, Police Divers, Rescue and Bomb Disposal Unit, PolAir, Marine Rescue, SES and Surf Life Saving NSW.
