Officials have recalled about 160,000 pounds of ground beef over concerns it was contaminated with the strongest strain of E.coli.

The raw meat packages had been distributed to Walmart by Cargill Meat Solutions, a Pennsylvania-based company that ships meat across the country.

The food safety watchdog is concerned that some products could end up in consumers’ refrigerators or freezers.

Packages do not have Cargill on the label. Instead, the branding on the front is ‘All Natural’. They were produced from April 26 to 27 and have the ID ‘EST.86P’. Photos are available here.

The USDA Food Safety Inspection Service recall message said Cargill reported the problem to them after noticing that “previously separated products had been inadvertently used in the production of ground beef.”

Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. These products should be discarded or returned to the place of purchase.

The specific strain of E. coli in question is O157:H7, known for its potential to cause a form of kidney failure – hemolytic uremic syndrome – which can be fatal.

Symptoms include bloody diarrhea and abdominal cramps for two to eight days.

More commonly, symptoms of E.coli include severe diarrhea, stomach cramps, vomiting and nausea. These typically appear three to four days after exposure.

Some may feel sick sooner, while others may take a week to feel unwell.

The USDA said there have been no reports of people becoming ill so far.

Individuals at greatest risk for complications include young children, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems.
