Urgent onion recall at trendy grocery chain for over 1,000 packets that ‘may be contaminated with salmonella’
Major retailers including Trader Joe’s have issued an emergency recall for more than 1,000 packages of green onions after tests showed the products “may be contaminated with salmonella.”
A total of 1,271 cases of green onions were voluntarily recalled Church Brothers LLC on Oct. 18, following the discovery of a single product sample collected by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency that “indicated the presence of Salmonella.”
The recalled products were distributed to a small number of stores in Canada and the U.S. in eleven states, Alabama, California, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, New York, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Virginia.
Products in stores, including popular neighborhood grocer Trader Joe’s, are being recalled because of the possible contamination.

Church Brothers brand Green Onions Iceless 4 x 2lb Reg Church Brothers Mexico in a clear bag, with lot code CB272378, was among the products listed.
Trader Joe’s Green Onion Iceless 24 x 6oz Reg Trader Joe’s Mexico in a branded bag, with the code CB272328 and a pack date of 9/25/24 on the back of the bag.
In Canada and the US, Imperial Fresh’s Green Onion Iceless 4 x 2lb Reg with the same lot code in a clear bag was also on the recall list.
The US Food and Drug Administration has advised anyone with these products to throw them away and not consume them.

Products have been recalled from eleven states, including Alabama, California, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, New York, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Virginia
Salmonella infections usually manifest in healthy people in the form of fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. Currently no illnesses have been reported.
In young children, frail and elderly people, or people with weakened immune systems, the Salmonella organism can cause ‘serious and sometimes fatal infections’.
A recent recall for several brands of eggs was announced due to salmonella outbreaks in nine states.
The FDA has recalled chicken eggs from Milo’s Poultry Farms and Tony’s Fresh Market due to a salmonella outbreak in nine states.
Earlier this month, the FDA gave the recall a “Class I” label, meaning there is a “reasonable probability” that exposure to the eggs “will cause serious adverse health effects or death.”
The contaminated eggs, distributed by Wisconsin-based Milo’s Poultry Farms, LLC, have sickened 65 people and hospitalized 24.
