Urgent investigation underway after reports a child was left inside a car in a shopping centre carpark

Concerned shoppers have launched a police investigation after reports a child was locked in a car in a shopping center car park.

Photos of the child in the car at Sunnyside Shopping Mall in Murwillumbah, northern NSW, were posted to local social media groups about 5pm on Monday.

NSW Police have confirmed they are investigating the matter and have urged anyone with information to come forward.

The vehicle had left the car park when police arrived, but tracked down the owner of the black Mitsubishi 4WD.

A number of users said they had contacted police, while others urged the locals who posted the image to smash the windows of the car, according to the Daily Telegraph.

It is illegal in the state to leave a child under the age of seven unattended in a vehicle if doing so poses a risk to their safety or is likely to cause discomfort.

There’s more to come.
