Australia’s consumer watchdog has issued an urgent recall of a popular bicycle, warning that a manufacturing defect could pose a serious safety risk to cyclists.
The handlebar clamp on some Brompton T Line bikes can become loose, the regulator warned. This can cause the steering support and fork to become misaligned, leading to loss of control over the handlebars.
“There is a risk of accident and serious injury if the rider loses control of the handlebars while using the bicycle,” the ACCC said on Friday.
‘Consumers should immediately stop using the bicycles.’
Affected consumers can have the repair carried out free of charge at a Brompton dealer, the regulator said.
‘Consumers who have access to a bicycle torque wrench and can perform the repair themselves should follow the instructions on the recall website to tighten the bolts on their steerer tube pivot clamp.
‘Consumers who are uncomfortable carrying out the repair themselves, or who are unable to visit a Brompton dealer, can contact Brompton for assistance in arranging a repair.’
The affected bicycles were manufactured before June 21, 2024 and have serial numbers ranging from 2104190001 to 2406070001.
The bicycles were sold nationally and internationally between February 1, 2022 and July 24, 2024.
