News from a live action Until sunrise film, which was announced early last year, was greeted with almost immediate trepidation by many fans of the series. After all, the 2015 game already featured a cast of Hollywood actors, and part of the game’s charm was the fact that at every turn the player decided what would happen: how would the movie decide which version of the story the game was the best? It turns out that won’t be a problem, as the game tells a new story with a different cast of characters.
The announcement came during Sony’s presentation at the 2025 Consumer Electronics Show, via a video of actor Peter Stormare, the only member of the original game’s cast to reprise his role in the film. Stormare plays Dr. Alan J. Hill, a psychologist who, in the original game, is a narrator of sorts for the game’s events, and is mainly seen during first-person interview segments.
According to Stormare’s announcement, just because it’s a new story doesn’t mean long-time Until Dawn fans shouldn’t be excited. The video says that the film closely adheres to the spirit of the game and that, like the game, it will be a love letter to the horror genre.
That’s probably the best possible option. After all, Until sunriseThe success of developer Supermassive Games in 2015 allowed developer Supermassive Games to launch a series of similar choose-your-own-adventure horror games, each with their own unique characters and stories, so why not start fresh too?
We also wonder if keeping with the spirit of the games could indicate that the film is adding an element of choice or randomness. While there probably isn’t room for a fully interactive adventure in a movie theater, it’s entirely possible that the production team, led by director David F. Sandberg (Annabelle: Creation) and writer Gary Dauberman (It), could follow in the footsteps of the film version of Clue, giving the film different endings or different versions that vary based on the theater. Sony Pictures did something similar a few years ago with the release of Spider-Man: About the Spider-Verse – although the changes between versions were quite minor.
Whatever happens, we won’t have to wait much longer to find out more. Until sunrise will be released in theaters on April 25 and will star Ella Rubin (Anora), Michael Cimino (Annabelle comes home), Ji-young Soon (Expats), Odessa A’zion (Hellraiser), Maia Mitchell (Good problems), and Belmont Cameli (Based on a true story).
