Universal Music’s Swift move to cash in on AI
The world’s largest record label has laid out plans to cash in on artificial intelligence as fears of its impact on artists mount.
Universal Music, which features pop stars like Beyonce and Taylor Swift in its books, said it will explore the role of AI.
The rise of generative AI has set alarm bells ringing among labels because it can be used without permission to mimic voices, melodies and lyrics.

This can then be used to create mock versions of songs, undermining labels and their talent.
Earlier this year, Universal Music had an AI-produced song imitating rapper Drake and singer The Weeknd removed from streaming platforms.
Universal has said it will partner with Google-owned YouTube to launch a product that will eventually monetize this threat.
Universal said it will work with musicians to figure out what this product might look like.
Sir Lucian Grainge, chairman and CEO of Universal Music, said: “I believe AI will enhance human imagination and enrich musical creativity.”
