With weeks to go until the Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, teams competing in the tournament will earn significantly more in 2023 than they did in 2019.
According to FIFA, the prize money budget awarded to teams that have qualified for their tournament has more than tripled from their previous tournament in France.
FIFA will pay out a total of $152 million through their performance fund, their club benefits program and preparation money which will be distributed to each country.
This is relatively much more than the $50 million handed out to teams in 2019.
The teams that benefit the most from this are the ones that do worse in the tournament – which can be seen as an effort to grow the game in areas that haven’t funded their women’s programs as much.

While the prize for the champions has netted nearly $300,000, those who don’t win the title will take home bigger prizes than they did four years ago.
The runner-up will earn $415,000 more, the third place player will earn $610,000 more and the fourth place player will receive $855,000 more in return than in the previous tournament.
Those who finish outside the top four will also see a big boost – quarter-finalists see a $730k jump and those who don’t get past the round of 16 get a $870k boost.
Teams that made it through the tournament but failed to progress past the group stage will receive over $800,000 more this cycle than the previous one.
Group stage women’s soccer players earn $30,000 each, while the round of 16 and quarterfinalists get back $60,000 and $90,000, respectively.
Those in the top four earn six figures – with members of the fourth-place team earning $165,000 each. Players who finish in third place will receive $180,000 each.

While significant, this still pales in comparison to the $42 million Argentina won in Qatar in 2022
As for the two finalists, the members of the winning team will get back $270,000 each, while the runners-up will get $195,000.
These are significant paydays for female soccer players — who earn an average of just $14,000 from their club contracts, according to FIFA.
In comparison, a 2015 study by DailyMail.com found that the average Premier League salary was £2.29 million, the equivalent of £2.95 million today or $3.67 million.
While $152 million in prize money is significant, it still lags behind the men’s game. Last year in Qatar, FIFA distributed $440 million in prize money, with Argentina taking home $42 million in prize money for winning the tournament.
