UNC men’s basketball players were splashed with water by Duke fans on Saturday after defeating their fierce rivals – with at least one empty plastic water bottle also thrown.

The No. 7 Tar Heels defeated the No. 9 Blue Devils 84-79 to win the ACC regular season title outright and sweep their season series against Duke.

The waterworks came after several UNC players taunted the crowd by waving goodbye.

That group also included Cormac Ryan, who scored a season-high 31 points in the win.

He hit a huge three-pointer with 1:38 to go, extending the Tar Heels’ lead to nine.

He later made two free throws with 4.7 seconds left, giving his team a 25–6 (17–3 conference) record.

Harrison Ingram added 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Tar Heels, while Kyle Filipowski had 23 points to lead the Blue Devils (24-7, 15-5).

There was also a familiar bit of rivalry, aside from the drink-throwing fans.

That came after Filipowski and Ingram ended up on the floor after Duke’s big man contested Ingram’s shot six minutes into the first half.

When Ingram got up to run back on defense, Filipowski kicked his right leg up and dropped Ingram back to the hardwood near center court.

UNC coach Hubert Davis immediately began frantically motioning for the officials to watch the replay, but there was no whistle, stoppage or review as the rivalry battle raged on.

UNC and Duke will compete in the ACC Tournament next week before competing in March Madness.
