Unai Emery admits Aston Villa could sell a key player this summer as they try to stick to spending rules.

The Financial Fair Play rules are high on the agenda for Premier League clubs, with Nottingham Forest to find out on Monday whether they are accused of breaching them. Everton have been given a 10-point penalty for crossing the limit.

Villa are likely to be cautious in this transfer window but will press again in the summer, although that could mean selling one of their midfielders Douglas Luiz or Boubacar Kamara to fund their ambitions.

“We are trying to adhere to Financial Fair Play while retaining the best players in our squad,” said Emery, whose team will move level on points with Premier League leaders Liverpool if they win at Everton tomorrow.

‘But of course we are not afraid to sell someone if a very good offer comes in and it gives us the opportunity to improve our FFP position.

‘We are going to work with respect for the rules. However, we have to be sure that we don’t lose our potential as a team, even if we have to sell some players.

‘It can be dangerous if you sell players just to have money. It can be difficult to replace them and remain successful at the same time.”

When Villa signed Kamara on a free transfer in the summer of 2022, any fee he generates would represent pure profit. He and Luiz are valued at around £100 million each.

Meanwhile, Everton boss Sean Dyche played down rumors that winger Arnaut Danjuma would leave the club this month and said he is set to play against Villa.

Danjuma this week posted a photo of himself on board a plane as he talked about a move to Lyon. He joined the Toffees on loan from Villarreal this summer but has struggled to get a place in Dyche’s team.

But Dyche has dismissed rumors of Danjuma’s loan being cut off, saying: ‘The situation is simple: he is an Everton player. He played the last game and has a fair chance of playing in the next one.”
