Yanchyshen volunteered to “heroically defend Ukraine” within days of Putin’s full-scale invasion of the country.

The ballet dancer, who is believed to have “loved Ukraine more than anything,” served as a machine gunner, local media reported.

“The artist’s ballet shoes were replaced by army boots, and the music of his favorite performances was replaced by the sound of mortar fire,” said Odessa Opera.

Harry Sevoyan, head of Odessa Opera, praised Yanchyshen as “a smart, talented, decent, intelligent man.”

“He was one of the first to defend his homeland, not by summons, not by warrant, but by his own decision.”

One of Mr. Yanchyshen’s most notable roles was that of a dying soldier in the ballet Trymai.

“As fate would have it, this role turned out to be prophetic for the artist.”
