Ukraine boasts that it has developed a new super missile that has already delivered “impeccable performance” in attacking Russian forces.

The weapon knocked out a Russian S-400 Triumf air defense system last week during a spectacular attack on annexed Crimea.

It was initially speculated that Kiev had used a Storm Shadow missile supplied by the British or French with pinpoint accuracy in this deadly attack on Olenivka off Cape Tarkhankut in northwestern Crimea.

But it is now clear that Ukraine has deployed its own sophisticated new cruise missile.

“The missile was new, absolutely modern,” said Oleksiy Danilov, secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine.

He praised the “flawless performance.”

Ukrainian television said there is “no clarity as to whether it is an absolutely new missile or a modified missile.”

One suspicion is that Ukraine modified the low-flying, subsonic Neptune anti-ship missile that sank Vladimir Putin’s famous Moskva flagship of the Black Sea Fleet last year.

The new missile appears to be designed to hit ground targets.

The hit on the S-400 was of great significance, as the state-of-the-art Russian air defense system and associated radar were supposed to detect and destroy missiles some 200 miles away.

The deployment of Cape Tarkhankut gave Russia control over a strip of strategic land and water in the western Black Sea.

There were previous claims that the Ukrainians were modifying Neptune not only with GPS, but also with other means to potentially attack land targets as far as 360 kilometers away.

Ukraine’s S-400 strike last week destroyed air defense missiles in a giant explosion and also knocked out Russian troops.

“As a result of the explosion, the installation itself, the missiles and the personnel installed on it were completely destroyed,” said Ukrainian official Anton Gerashchenko.

In the aftermath of the attack, some Russian sources suggested that the attack was carried out by Storm Shadow.

Yet Ukraine develops its own missiles and also relies on Western munitions such as Storm Shadow and the US HIMARS.

It has also adapted the S-200 air defense missile into an attack option that has been used on annexed Crimea and Russia.

A Ukrainian cruise missile was destroyed in mid-air off the coast of Crimea today, the Russian defense ministry said.
