Known for not backing down from an opponent, UFC Featherweight Champion Alexander Volkanovski has this time called up Conor McGregor for a possible lightweight fight.
Volkanovski, who is considered by many to be the greatest featherweight of all time, recently expressed his desire to take on the Irish superstar.
“It’s pretty easy for me to say Conor McGregor because he was at featherweight,” the Aussie told The MMA Fan Podcast.
“He was a featherweight. We must not forget the champions I defeated. I’ve beaten every other champion in the featherweight division.
“The only champion I haven’t fought in the featherweight division is Conor McGregor.”
Featherweight champion Alex Volkanovski has asked Conor McGregor to meet him at lightweight
The pair have since gone back and forth on Twitter to discuss a potential showdown, which Volkanovsi says should happen at 155 pounds.
“Let’s do it at Lightweight,” Volkanovski wrote on Twitter.
The post caught the attention of the former two-division champion who fired back and questioned the bravery of ‘The Great’.
“Lol bang,” McGregor wrote.
The Aussie refused to back down.
‘Always. Everywhere. Any weight!’ he answered.
“Then why are you asking for 155? That’s what I’m saying too,” McGregor wrote.
Volkanovski, who has competed in MMA up to middleweight, was given the final say on the matter — and McGregor has since deleted his tweets.
Conor McGregor doubted the Aussie’s mettle as he wanted to fight lightweight
‘Yes, you say it, but I did it. I’ve fought at middleweight, welterweight, lightweight and featherweight,” Volkanovski said.
Volkanovsi is coming off a controversial decision loss to lightweight champion Islam Makhachev earlier this year, where he surprised many with his strength in the upper weight class.
He is currently preparing for his next title defense against Yair Rodriguez for the main event of UFC 290 in July.
McGregor, who has not fought since his loss to Dustin Poirier in 2021, which injured his ankle, is now scheduled to fight Michael Chandler – whom he coached on the TV show The Ultimate Fighter.
No date or location has been announced yet, though ‘Notorious’ assures fans that everything will be revealed during the show.
