UFC fighter Charles Oliveira has revealed that he was having so much trouble with his eyesight that at one point he would see three opponents in the ring instead of one.
The Brazilian faces Islam Makhachev on Saturday at UFC 280 with the vacant lightweight title on the line during the Abu Dhabi clash – and Oliveira will be determined to reclaim the title he held before failing to gain weight prior to his victory over Justin Gaethje.
Oliveira has boldly plotted a brutal victory over Makhachev – sworn to ‘kill this man’, and before the fight detailed his vision problems, though they didn’t get in the way of his impressive recent run.
UFC star Charles Oliveira has revealed his eyesight was so bad he saw three faces in the cage
Speak with the Flow podcasthe said he was unimpressed with his eye problems — which have now been remedied by surgery — and was simply meant to “hit the middle one.”
‘I see three’ [faces]. If I hit the middle one; that’s good,” he said.
‘I think you keep the same technique. Three guys is perfect for me.
“I’ll tell you the truth, I’m a man who has a lot of faith in God and it’s no joke. When I take off my glasses I can only see 50 percent, but it has never bothered me in a fight.
“If I hit that one in the middle, it’s good.”
His poor eyesight – now remedied by surgery – didn’t stop him from beating Dustin Poirer (L) last year
The Brazilian insists he was ‘never bothered’ by the issue despite being left ‘blind’ when he took off his glasses
Oliveira, who has won 33 fights and lost eight, insists he was never affected by his poor eyesight – despite being ‘blind’ when he took off his glasses – as he still managed to take big wins in title fights against Michael Chandler and Dustin Poirer last year.
“It never bothered me in a fight. Sometimes I walk in without glasses, sometimes I walk in with glasses to look more harmless and nerdy than I already am. If I take off my glasses, it’s normal, I can see my opponent on the other side.
“God bless me so much that I can see normally. But if I take them off in the street, I’m blind.’
Oliveira’s poor eyesight was first brought to light when a member of the public took his glasses off after his win over Poirer, which prevented him from walking backstage.
He faces Islam Makhachev and has boldly vowed to ‘kill’ his rival when they face each other at UFC 280
As he prepares to face Makhachev, the Russian is seen as the favorite – but Oliveira believes he only got the chance by being close friends with ex-lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov – making him ‘skip the line’.
“I think like me, he should have been fighting someone in the top-5, not just riding someone else’s wave and skipping the line like he did,” he added.
‘It is for history and all that he’ [Khabib] did. If it was another man [Makhachev] would have to walk the walk I was supposed to walk, knock on people’s doors and try to get to a top-5. The reason this fight is happening is because of him.”
