Leon Edwards’ coach Dave Lovell has gone viral on social media for his rousing pep talk before the Brit’s sensational knockout win over Kamaru Usman at UFC 278.

Edwards appeared destined for defeat on the scorecards in Salt Lake City before he produced a devastating head kick which floored the welterweight champion to the point of no return in the fifth and final round.

It was a spectacular finish from the 30-year-old, who became only the second British champion in UFC history by dethroning Usman with just over a minute on the clock.

And after receiving an emotional pep talk from him before the final round, Edwards has Lovell to thank for delivering the knockout blow late on.

Prior to the fifth round, the UFC star’s coach could be heard geeing his fighter up in footage which has since gone viral online.

An impassioned Lovell said to Edwards as his title shot slipped away from him: ‘You’ve got to stop feeling sorry for your f**king self.

‘Come on then, what’s wrong with you?!

‘Come on Leon, you got this man.’

After the stirring speech, Edwards was on hand with one of the most iconic knockouts in recent UFC history, whipping a ferocious kick into the head of Usman and sending him crashing to the canvas.

Fans quickly took to social media to praise Lovell for his influential pep talk, with one writing: ‘Amazing cornerman, no sugarcoating – straight facts’.

Another posted: ‘We need more coaches like this … Imagine those delusional coaches who say they’re Winning even tho they’re clearly not … Without that harsh talking Leon wouldn’t have won imo’.

A third commented: ‘Tells it like it is. You can tell he truly cares for leon. type of coach every fighter needs.’

While one simply said: ‘Goosebumps’.

Edwards was beaten by Usman when they last collided in 2015, but on Saturday night ‘Rocky’ avenged that previous defeat while ending his rival’s 15-fight UFC win streak.

‘You all doubted me, saying I couldn’t do it – look at me now,’ he said after the fight.

‘I’m from the trenches. I’m built like this. I’ve been doubted my whole life but look at me now.’
