UEFA Champions League highlights: Bayern and Real suffer shock defeats

UEFA Champions League 2024

Matchweek 2 of the 2024 UEFA Champions League ended with plenty of drama as defending champions Real Madrid and Bayern Munich suffered shock defeats on the road to LOSC and Aston Villa respectively. It was Liverpool who continued their winning run at home against Italian side Bologna.

Bayern stunned by Aston Villa

Bayern Munich traveled to Villa Park to take on Aston Villa, who are also known as big killers in the Premier League. Unai Emery’s side presented a difficult challenge for the Bavarians, who were unable to get past goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez that evening. It was Jhon Duran who scored the winner with almost ten minutes to play, giving his side and the home fans an unforgettable UCL evening to cherish forever. Villa now has two wins in as many games in what is a dream start for the England team.

Defending champions Real Madrid also suffered a setback away from home as they faced off against French side LOSC. With Kylian Mbappe starting from the bench, Real preferred Vinicius Jr and Endrick up front that evening.

Despite having more possession, it was the French side who broke through just before the half-time whistle, as they were awarded a penalty for a Camavinga handball in the penalty area.

Jonathan David stepped up and converted the penalty, giving his side the lead at half-time. Real Madrid could not find the back of the net in the second half, despite Mbappe coming on for a cameo, as Los Blancos saw their 36-match unbeaten run end on the night.

Liverpool records second victory

Arne Slot’s Liverpool also recorded their second win of the tournament as they edged past Bologna at Anfield with a 2-0 scoreline. Goals from Mac Allister and Mohd Salah in the first and second half respectively saw the Reds continue their winning momentum in the tournament.

Atletico humiliated by Benfica

It was a night for setbacks, as Spanish side Atletico Madrid also suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat to Portuguese side Benfica away from home. Two penalties against Atletico did not make things easy for them as they looked no match for the hosts on the night.
