The Star Wars galaxy is known for its planets with a single identifiable environmental feature. There’s Tatooine, the desert planet; Hoth, the snow planet; Kamino, the water planet; and Mustafar, the fire and lava planet. Thanks to Star Wars banditsUbisoft’s open-world rogue adventure game, Star Wars now features a wind planet.
Toshara is an all-new location debuting Star Wars bandits, designed in collaboration between Ubisoft’s Massive Entertainment and Lucasfilm. Toshara is covered in windswept plains inspired by the African savannah, developers say in a new behind-the-scenes video, and the planet’s geography is literally shaped by its ever-present stormy breezes. So is the striking town of Murugana, a settlement built into a massive rock carved by millennia of wind gusts.
Wind is the signature feature of Toshara, and Lucasfilm and Massive seem to take it very seriously. Developers are integrating planetary dominion with one environment that permeates much of the Star Wars galaxy in Toshara’s flora, fauna, and economy – it seems Tosharans use fliers as some kind of farming mechanism. One can only assume that Murugana’s local windbreaker dealers are in business with gangbusters.
Star Wars bandits protagonist Kay Vess will apparently spend a lot of time on Toshara, her locks fluttering in the wind. The 10-minute gameplay preview Massive showed on Ubisoft Forward back in June was largely set there; it’s where Kay runs afoul of Imperial officers after a run-in with a local crime syndicate.
If you’d prefer your Star Wars to stay on well-trodden terrain, don’t worry: you can explore the vast expanses of sand of Tatooine in Star Wars bandits, at. Kay will apparently have an encounter with none other than local mobster Jabba the Hutt as she fraternizes with the scum and baddies of Star Wars’ underworld.
Star Wars bandits is scheduled for release on PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X sometime in 2024.
