Ubisoft’s new free-to-play shooter XDefiant is facing classic launch day issues

People digging into Ubisoft’s free-to-play arena shooter XChallenging won’t be able to access matchmaking due to connection issues, Ubisoft confirmed on Tuesday. “We are aware that some players may not be able to participate in a game. Please be patient while we look into servers and matchmaking,” a representative posted from the official X account.

Players report searching endlessly for other players before receiving the “Cannot find match” message. XChallenging officially launched around 1:00 PM EDT, and players faced problems almost immediately as people flocked to the game. “Matchmaking servers are going to explode!” XChallenging executive producer Mark Rubin posted on X shortly after launch. “We’re working on it.”

Ubisoft is later suggest updates XChallenging‘s server problems improve, but it was also noted that the team is still conducting research. The company will continue to update players as progress continues.

XChallenging is a free-to-play 6v6 shooter that lets people play as one of five factions based on Ubisoft properties: Libertad Revolutionaries from Far Cry6; ex-Ghost Recon specialists known as Phantoms; agents of Splinter Cell’s Echelon spy agency; DedSec street hackers out Guard dogs; and the Cleaners, former sanitation workers from The Division series. Players can switch factions and weapon loadouts throughout the game, similar to switching characters Overwatch.

Ubisoft planned to release XChallenging in October 2023, but ended slow down the game indefinitely. Ubisoft expected it then XChallenging to be released in March, which was pushed again. The company is looking forward to it XChallenging to cement its place in the live service space, This is evident from a financial report from February.

Overloaded servers may not seem like the worst problem you can have; it usually means a lot of people are trying to play. But a free-to-play game with a bad launch runs the risk of players moving on to something else if they can’t get into it; there’s no real shortage of other shooters for future players XChallenging play instead.
