U2 frontman Bono has spoken out about his friendship with the late Michael Hutchence and why they ended up breaking ties.

In an excerpt from his book Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story published by Apple Newsthe 62-year-old singer revealed that he and his wife Ali Hewson had a close relationship with Hutchence and his partner Paula Yates in the early 90s.

But things changed when Hutchence and Yates “wrapped into the vortex of a recreational drug use that had become hard work for everyone, especially their families, especially the younger ones.”

“As their behavior changed, our friendship became tense and we felt uncomfortable during their visits,” Bono wrote.

In 1996, Hutchence and Yates welcomed their daughter Heavenly Hiraani Tiger Lily Hutchence Geldof and asked Bono and his wife to become her godparents.

However, they refused because they were “so unpicked” by the couple’s drug use and this ended their friendship.

In 1997, a maid found Hutchence naked and dead behind the door of his hotel room on November 22 at around 11:50 am.

A coroner ruled that the 37-year-old committed suicide by hanging himself while depressed and under the influence of alcohol and drugs.

Paula died in 2000 of a heroin overdose.
