Tyson Fury vs Francis Ngannou – Press conference LIVE: ‘Battle of the Baddest’ fighters come face-to-face for the first time ahead of clash in Saudia Arabia
Follow the Mail Sport live blog for the latest news as the ‘Gypsy King’ Tyson Fury and Francis Ngannou hold their first press conference ahead of their superfight set to take place in Saudi Arabia later this year.
Fury now sings Chumbawamba
But an interesting moment when Fury, jokingly, calls for a ‘war’.
Ngannou, suddenly injecting some frustration into his voice, says, “Oh, you’re going to have war.” Would they be willing to stand in the center of the ring and deliver, throwing shots upon shots?
My suspicion is that Ngannou is and Fury is not. Fury will just want to stay out of the way.
‘I’m here because God wanted it’
I’m not sure, Tyson.
Tyson holds court
Nothing shocking has been said so far…
Thanks to His Excellency (again)
If we took a chance every time they thanked “His Excellency,” we’d be screwed.
Fury called Ngannou a ‘big dosser’. That’s another one from the Fury bingo card.
His father John starts a fight with someone 30 years younger?
Oh no, he just yelled at Ngannou to show his manhood.
Ngannou: I am very happy and excited
This fulfills a lifelong dream of Ngannou: stepping into the boxing ring and meeting the best.
He emphasizes that history will be written. “I can’t stop thinking about it!”
Ngannou adds, “I’m going to hunt down that guy’s head and take it off.”
Bob Arum: Really a huge event
Don’t get me wrong, these guys are huge. Big, big guys. Big punchers. But surely Ngannou won’t be able to hit him?
Conor McGregor didn’t really hit Floyd Mayweather and it feels like this will be similar.
A dream come true!
So says Ngannou’s advisor Marquel Martin. They are honored and grateful to be there and receive by far the biggest payday of their careers.
Martin thinks that if, and it’s a big if, Ngannou slaps Fury’s chin, Fury will go to sleep.
That’s probably true. But honestly I don’t see Ngannou coming close.
This is the BIGGEST event I’ve ever been involved in!
So says Hall of Fame promoter Frank Warren. He talks down his man Tyson Fury despite seemingly dodging the world’s most decorated heavyweight, Oleksandr Usyk.
Instead, he takes on a sold-out crossover against someone who’s barely been in a boxing ring for three months.
This will be ‘ex-ci-ting!’, adds Frank.
OOOHHH, the Riyadh Championship Belt is on the line! Where every boxer grows up and dreams of winning.
The fighters are on stage!
I’m not sure about the MC. He’s not Michael Buffer. More story now about the glorious, beautiful and brilliant Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
The same Saudi Arabia, which has been widely criticized for its numerous human rights violations, the persecution of gays, minorities and women, mass executions, lack of press freedom and censorship.
Here we go…
…a random guy thanks a bunch of other random guys before we can get started. Keep it up!
Ngannou’s advisor takes the stage, followed by promoter Bob Arum and Frank Warren.
Things are quiet on the western front right now…
Live media coverage on the red carpet has stopped and we are now waiting for the press conference to begin…
They are currently making us wait!
Hopefully it won’t take too long.
Ngannou has Tyson in his corner… will he be just as explosive at the upcoming press conference?
Hopefully we’ll find out soon…
Almost there…
Everyone is waiting in anticipation for the next ridiculous thing Tyson Fury is going to do.
Will he dress up as Batman?
Will he say something offensive (again)?
Will he face Ngannou?
Stick around to find out…
CONFIRMED: Wardley cut and bleeding
Their fight was about to be announced on the undercard. Both spoke to the media on the red carpet and the needle between them has clearly boiled over so far.
Break: IT ALL GOES OFF!
Tyson Fury jokes ‘that fight stole my thunder – I’ll have to have a word!’
That’s one of the reasons why you should promote a fight.
Break: FABIO WARDLEY HAS BEEN CUT!
It all starts on the red carpet. Fabio Wardley has been cut after a scuffle with his future opponent David Adeleye!
Tyson Fury in the house!
He’s wearing an absolutely horribly loud suit. At least he won’t get run over.
He says, “There is always pressure. But I thrive under pressure!’
How do you deal with Francis?
“KIT HIM OUT!” Cheers for the tactical insight there, Tyson.
“Is that why you’re taking this risk?” Tyson is asked.
haha. What a joke. If Fury wanted to take a risk, he would fight a real boxer, say Oleksandr Usyk.
Easy for him to offend the Ukrainian – who, by the way, has three heavyweight titles on his ONE, while facing a non-boxer in a boxing ring. He takes the huge reward, knowing that there is no risk of Ngannou putting a gauntlet on him.
In my opinion, his boxing career is actually already over. He obviously doesn’t want to fight Usyk, so he’s just gone the Floyd Mayweather route of fighting people he knows he’ll beat to better his record and make a lot of money before he retires.
Rio Ferdinand speaks out…
The Man United legend discusses the upcoming press conference and he thinks it will be respectful.
Knowing Tyson Fury, I can’t imagine that. He will try to play the role of the former UFC star.
Rio points to the obvious: all the pressure is on Tyson.
T-minus 10 minutes!
About 10 minutes left until the press conference starts!
Undefeated Briton Fabio Wardley in the mixed zone right now…
Ngannou: Tyson’s not getting anything from me!
“He gets NOTHING from me (at the press conference).
‘(Training) is very different. You’re starting to feel your shoulders, my shoulders hurt.’
“Why should pressure be put on anyone? At this point in my life I am living the dream. The only pressure on me is to give it my all. I am fine.’
(About Mike Tyson in his camp) “I learned a lot of things. To have him this time… he’s not just here to watch, he’s here to help me and give me instructions. It’s Mike Tyson, I’m not tripping, this is for real!
‘This is how big it is. He’s the best that ever lived, he has a lot of respect for Tyson Fury as a fighter, but he’s in my corner. He has chosen his side! There are many things I learn from him.’
Joe Joyce is optimistic about Zhang’s rematch
British heavyweight Joe Joyce, who sticks out the over six-foot-tall Northern Irishman Carl Frampton in the interview section, emphasizes that he can win his rematch against 40-year-old Chinese boxer Zhilei Zhang.
They face off on Saturday, September 23.
Joyce adds that he might like a crossover fight like Fury v Ngannou. And speaking of that…
Many stars on the red carpet…
Former The Only Way Is Essex cast member Mark Wright and former Wycombe Wanderers forward Adebayo Akinfenwa are currently giving their say on the red carpet fight.
In case you were wondering…
Honestly, I wouldn’t want to get in the ring with big man Bayo!
