Tyson Fury announces he is RETIRING from boxing – and delivers cryptic message after Oleksandr Usyk took his heavyweight world titles

Tyson Fury has dramatically announced his retirement from boxing with immediate effect.

The Gypsy King, 36, revealed the shocking news in a video to his fans on Monday afternoon.

“Hello everyone, I’m going to make this short and sweet,” he said in a video he shared on social media.

‘I would like to announce my retirement from boxing. It was great, I loved every minute of it.

‘I’m going to end with this. Dick Turpin wore a mask. God bless everyone, see you on the other side. GET UP!’

Fury’s announcement comes after he was defeated by Oleksandr Usyk via unanimous decision in December in their rematch to retain the Ukrainian’s unified heavyweight world titles.

Tyson Fury has dramatically announced his retirement from boxing with immediate effect

Fury’s announcement has shocked boxing fans around the world, but some are wondering if it is real as the Gypsy King has previously retired from the sport.

In 2022, Fury revealed he was ‘done’ with boxing after beating Dillian Whyte, only to return at the end of the year to fight Derek Chisora.

After beating Whyte, Fury had said: ‘I’m done. Every good dog has his day. As the great Roman leader said, there will always be someone else to fight. When is enough, enough?

‘I’m happy, I’m healthy. I still have my brains, I can talk, I have a beautiful wife, I have six children, countless belts.

“I have enough money, success, fame, glory, what else am I doing it for?”

Fury defeated Chisora via TKO before then beating former MMA star Francis Ngannou via controversial split decision.

This set up a showdown with Usyk for the undisputed heavyweight title in Saudi Arabia, but Fury was forced to withdraw from the original date due to his fight with Ngannou.

It was then further postponed after the Gypsy King suffered a nasty cut above his eye, before they finally hit the ring in May.

Fury lost the fight via split decision, the first defeat of his professional career.

As part of the contract signed for the world title showdown, Fury activated his rematch clause.

However, despite an impressive performance, Fury lost again, with this defeat coming via unanimous decision.

The 36-year-old was expected to return to the ring this year in a blockbuster Battle of Britain showdown against old rival Anthony Joshua.

The two British heavyweights have shared a long and bitter rivalry over the years, with at times constant speculation that a highly anticipated fight between them would finally take place.

But despite strong public support for a fight and significant conjecture and negotiations, a showdown never took place.

Earlier this month, rumors circulated on social media that a fight between Joshua and Fury had finally been agreed in what would be dubbed ‘The Battle of Britain’ and perhaps the biggest fight in British boxing history.

And earlier on Monday, Eddie Hearn revealed he had booked Wembley Stadium for the fight which could take place in ‘May or June’, but admitted it all comes down to Fury’s decision after his defeat to Usyk.

‘Yes. We want to get back into the ring in May or June. Come July it doesn’t really matter,” Hearn said at the Ring Awards when asked if he had booked a Wembley date.

‘I still think it rests on Tyson Fury. Until the water recedes from the defeat and where he is mentally and what he wants to do, we’ll really find out.

“Because when he looks at the options, what else is he going to do and who else is he going to fight?”

Joshua confirmed speculation about a fight against Fury earlier this month by laying out his plan for the coming year.

“In 2025, I’m targeting Tyson Fury,” the 35-year-old explained during a trip to meet Nigerian President Bola Tinubu.

Some fans have wondered if Fury’s cryptic message at the end of his video, which stated that “Dick Turpin was wearing a mask,” was a possible dig at Joshua’s camp in terms of the fight negotiations.

Many have suggested that Fury is implying he is not happy with AJ’s camp, when he could be trying to get a bigger share of a potential purse.
