Tyson Fury opens up on wife Paris’s struggles knowing he could be ‘killed in the ring’, the ‘pressure’ of fight night… and his plans to become a Hollywood star

Tyson Fury admits he’s not surprised his wife cries when he goes to the boxing ring, even though he looks death right between the eyes every time.

The Gypsy King – who is 13 years and 11 months into his professional boxing career – has fought 34 times with 33 wins, no losses and one draw. But that is not enough.

The 35-year-old attempted to leave the sport in 2022 but returned to the ring after struggling with his mental health.

Now he heads to Saudi Arabia to take on Francis Ngannou in one of the biggest crossover fights in history.

Paris’ feelings towards Tyson and his boxing career were well documented in their Netflix show, At Home with the Furys.

The 33-year-old housewife talked about how she wanted Tyson to leave the sport before he was seriously injured and outlined the emotional turmoil she goes through on fight night.

Tyson continued this in his autobiography, Behind the Mask – in which he recalled how Paris wiped off her makeup and cried for three hours after being knocked down twice by Deontay Wilder in their first fight.

However, Tyson, who has not shy away from talking about his mental health, has decided to continue boxing despite noting the impact it is having on his wife and family.

Speaking exclusively to Mail Sport, Tyson sympathized with Paris and said he would be a ‘nervous wreck’ if she knowingly put herself in harm’s way again and again.

The Gypsy King said: ‘It must be terrible to know that your husband could die in a fight and that you have six children, seven in a minute, to look after on your own. That must be nerve-wracking.

‘If Paris got into something and I knew she could die at any moment, I would get nervous. So it’s quite a daunting task to see death right between the two eyes every time you climb into a boxing ring.

‘But it is something we will continue with. I make a lot of money. I get hazard pay and I get paid well for it. We know the risk and it is what it is. Nobody in my family wants me to box. I have too much to lose. But it’s something I like to do to keep the ball rolling.’

Tyson – who was diagnosed with bipolar and ADHD as an adult – admitted he lost sight of his ‘purpose’ after retiring from boxing following his victory over Dillian Whyte in April 2022.

So the Gypsy King returned to the ring to fight Derek ‘War’ Chisora and said he would continue boxing until he couldn’t do it anymore during an episode of At Home with the Furys.

Paris accepted his decision despite wanting him to take a step back to protect his mental and physical health. However, she still hopes he changes his mind and chooses to hang up his gloves for good.

Asked if the plan remains the same: fight until he can’t anymore, Tyson said: “I don’t know if you know. It’s no secret that my thoughts change like the wind or the weather, at least in Britain.

“One minute I’m here and the next minute I’m retired. Who knows. But I do know one thing: enjoy it while you can, because there will never be another Tyson Fury. There never was one before me and there never will be one after me.”

Paris has been praised for her patience and willingness to support her husband in his dark times after Netflix viewers witnessed her calming nature and unconditional love for Tyson, to whom she has been married for 15 years.

It’s clear that Tyson’s love for her is just as strong. He recognizes the difficulty of living with someone who suffers from depression, anxiety and suicidal thoughts, but he does his best to provide the best life possible for their family.

Tyson described boxing as his safe haven, but emphasized the emotional rollercoaster that comes with training for a fight. He described it as a “long process” that comes down to being crowned winner or loser.

He is confident he can handle the emotional strain this area brings, but says those “dragged into deep water” to face him cannot.

He told Mail Sport: ‘It’s a drawn-out process. By the time the fight comes, I will have done somewhere between 10 and 12 weeks of training for a single half-hour event.

‘It’s a lot of preparation for something so small. Many emotions play a role in the run-up to a fight. Winning or losing is a big deal. People don’t want to lose, they want to win. The world is watching. All the pressure is on.

“I imagine for other fighters it’s very nerve-wracking. Some people can handle it and some people can’t. When I drag these people into the deep waters, into the big boxing, they usually drown. It’s like being dragged into the deep sea by a Kraken. It’s a shame for them.’

Despite struggling with his mental health, Tyson is always on his A-game for press events. He is a lively character who fills the room with energy. People can’t help but smile in his presence.

When asked if it was a character he put on or if it came naturally to him to be an entertainer, Tyson said, “Kind of a showman! I am The one from Netflix Number 1 star.’

The Gypsy King added, “Yes, it comes naturally to me to be an entertainer. That’s what I do. I’m an entertainer. I’m not an athlete, I’m not a boxer, I’m an entertainer.’

Tyson plans to continue entertaining his fans inside and outside the ring. He told Mail Sport about his desire to star in a Hollywood film, claiming it is something he wants to tick off his bucket list.

Tyson also spoke about his plans to unseat Cristiano Ronaldo from the top spot when it comes to the richest athletes in the world according to Forbes.

Speaking exclusively to Mail Sport, he said: ‘I want to be at the top of the Forbes list. I want to be the highest paid sportsman in history. I want to make a Hollywood movie.

‘I’ve already done the assignment Netflix series, I’ve done autobiographies, wrestling and everything else. A Hollywood film and at the top of the Forbes list.’

When asked what genre of film he could see himself starring in, Tyson said, “Anything but probably action or comedy.”

Tyson isn’t the only athlete in his family eyeing a move to Hollywood. His brother Tommy revealed that his dream is to act in films, especially horror films, during an episode of At Home with the Furys.

The Love Island star said: ‘My dream now is to take up boxing and go as far as I can in it. Then I would like to dive into the films. I’ve made a decision. But I think it’s easier for me to deal with it because I don’t want to do serious acting. I just want to make horror films.’

Tyson replied to his brother, saying, “You’re a horror movie fan, aren’t you?”, to which Tommy replied, “I just watch them.”
