The driver of a pickup truck that crashed into a tree, killing five teenagers, faces enhanced charges for the tragedy.

Tyrell Edwards, 19, is charged with five counts of aggravated dangerous driving resulting in death after prosecutors alleged he was speeding more than 28 mph over the speed limit.

He did not appear at Picton Local Court on Friday morning when the charges were raised, reported the abc.

Edwards had initially faced a charge of dangerous driving resulting in death.

The new charges carry a potential sentence of 14 years in prison if convicted.

Three girls and two boys aged between 14 and 16 were killed when the driver with a P plate is alleged to have lost control of a Nissan Navara ute on East Parade in Buxton, near Picton, south-west Sydney, on 6 September last year.

Edwards escaped the crash with non-life-threatening injuries.

He remains in the community on bail with strict conditions, including leaving the family home only with his mother for limited reasons, including seeking medical attention.

His matter is expected to return to court in April.
