An irate groom has fired his brother from his plumbing company after the younger sibling ‘ruined’ his wedding day by proposing to his girlfriend during his best man’s toast.

The business owner, who shared his story Reddithired his brother three years ago after the coronavirus pandemic put him out of work.

He claimed their work arrangement had gone well until his brother “stole the shine” and “ruined” his wedding with the surprise proposal.

“My wife and I were shocked,” the groom stated, adding that he “decided to fire him the next day” because he “couldn’t imagine seeing him at work every day.”

He claims his brother, who is receiving severance pay, “doesn’t understand” why his employment was terminated and thinks the groom is “selfish and irrational.”

The Reddit user said he hired his brother, then 22, during the pandemic to help him “get back on his feet.”

He claims that prior to the incident at the wedding, the two had “no malice” and is even excited that his brother now wants to become a master plumber and “start his own business.”

But he doesn’t think he’ll be able to get over his brother distracting attention from him and his bride on their special day.

“At my wedding, where he was the best man, he decided that he would give us all a big surprise during his speech and decided to propose to his old girlfriend,” he explained.

My wife and I were shocked. We both feel like he stole the shine from our day. Everyone else in our families was so excited and kept taking pictures with her, looking at the ring, etc.’

He claims that both his brother and parents believe he overreacted to the situation by firing his younger sibling.

They say ‘business should be separate from our personal lives’ but I just can’t overlook what he did and how he ruined our day. Am I thinking too much about it?’ he asked.

“He’s still my brother, and I wouldn’t let him lose his house over this. But as a small company, I can’t imagine seeing him at work every day. At least not now.’

The groom, who received mixed reactions from fellow Reddit users, added: “I love all the people who say “you were looking for a reason to fire him” or “you’re just jealous.”

‘He was my witness. I was never angry because he opened his own business. In fact, he has my full blessing.

“This job was just to get him back on his feet. I am so glad he liked the profession and wants to continue in it. There was no malice before this incident.”

While most users agreed that it was “tacky” of his brother to propose during the wedding reception, many felt that terminating his employment was an “inappropriate overreaction.”

The groom hit back, claiming his His brother’s actions at the wedding showed a lack of “maturity,” so he fired him.

He added: ‘I wouldn’t speak badly if a potential employer asked me about him. I would be honest about his work. But what he did shows a lack of maturity and has left me with a lack of confidence. Not good qualities for an employee.

“I understand it was ‘off the clock’, but you can’t insult your boss off the clock and expect no consequences. We are a small company (five employees, now four) and I supervise everyone. He will be able to find work elsewhere in the area.’
