Two-time Oscar-winning star is left in the shade by their towering son on the Golden Globes red carpet – but can YOU guess who his legendary A-list parent is?

She’s rarely kept in the shadows, but that’s exactly what happened to this particular actress on Sunday night as the 81st annual Golden Globes kicked off in Los Angeles.

On what turned out to be a special evening, as she went on to win the fourth Golden Globe of an illustrious career, she was joined by her son on the red carpet outside the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

Dressed in an elegant black tuxedo, crisp white shirt and bow tie, the 23-year-old – one of two sons – towered over his A-list mother as they posed for photos.

While her glittering career in television and film began when she was a child, her own children have benefited from a conventional upbringing away from the public eye.

Her eldest, a Yale graduate, was previously described by his mother as a “theater nerd,” while youngest son Kit – attending the Globes on Sunday – has pursued an alternative career in science.

But who is his famous mother? Hold the liver and broad beans, pour yourself a nice Chianti… then scroll down.

That’s right, it’s Jodie Foster!

The celebrated star was on hand to accept the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Series or TV Movie, thanks to her role in True Detective: Night Country, and son Kit was there to support her.

Foster welcomed sons Charlie, 26, and Kit during her 15-year relationship with film producer Cydney Bernard.

The couple split in 2008, with the actress eventually starting a new relationship with actress and cinematographer Alexandra Hedison, whom she married in 2014.

Paying tribute to her children after receiving her latest award, she told guests: “I just want to thank my family.

“Because Kit, my scientist son, and Charlie, my actor son who is at the beginning of his career, hopefully you understand the joy, such a joy, that comes from doing really hard, meaningful, good work.

“So my boys, I love you, and this is of course for you. And to the love of my life, Alex, thank you forever.”

In September, the notoriously guarded actress admitted she was excited about what the future held for her two boys.

She told me PEOPLE: ‘They are at the age where they are starting their careers and they are quite unsure about what will happen next.

“But every time they get pleasure… like when I got this job or got an audition, my heart fills fourteen times because I have the memory of a wonderful career built on doing meaningful work, and I know that that’s the recipe for happiness.’

Foster welcomed eldest son Charles in 1998, and her youngest – born Christopher Bernard but commonly called Kit – followed in 2001.

Both grew up in Los Angeles, and the actress previously emphasized the need to give them a steady upbringing after her own upbringing was disrupted by her burgeoning career.

“I have a psychological need to create a really safe, normal life for them because if there was one thing I missed growing up, it was that,” she told PEOPLE in 2007.

“I really longed for a routine, stable life and that’s what I gave my children.”
