Two Perth tourists drown after becoming caught in rip at Conspicuous Cliff beach

A pair of tourists have drowned after becoming entangled in a rip on a beach known for its treacherous waters.

Emergency services received reports of three adults in distress in the water at Conspicuous Cliff beach near Walpole, in the south-west of Western Australia, at around 2.40pm on Saturday.

Police arrived on scene to find the trio had been pulled from the surf and began performing CPR.

A 44-year-old man and a 40-year-old woman died at the scene, while a second man, 42, was revived and rushed to hospital.

WA Police said the trio knew each other and had traveled from Perth to the beach, which is not patrolled by lifeguards.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.

The Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions warns that the stretch of coastline, including Conspicuous Cliff beach, ‘may be hazardous’.

The area is known to have “large, unpredictable waves and swells, slippery rocks and strong currents.”
