The Memphis Fire Department announced Monday night that three staff members had been fired for failing to help Tire Nichols as he lay dying after a police beating on January 7.

The trio consisted of two paramedics, Robert Long and JaMichael Sandridge, and Lt. Michelle Whitaker.

His firing comes hours after a sixth police officer, Preston Hemphill, was accused of losing his job. Hemphill was one of the officers who initially stopped Nichols at a traffic stop and fired the Taser at him as Nichols ran away. Hemphill was not on the scene when Nichols was caught and beaten to death.

Long and Sandridge arrived on the scene after Nichols was caught and beaten, in a vehicle driven by a driver, with Whitaker also inside.

She remained in the vehicle while Long and Sandridge got out to attend to the scene.
