Two more infants die on newborn loungers: 10 babies have died to date

Two more babies die on newborn lounge chairs: 10 babies have died – but THOUSANDS of recalled products are still for sale on Facebook Marketplace

Two more babies have died on newborn loungers, bringing the total number of fatalities to 10, it was revealed on Wednesday.

In 2021, more than three million Boppy newborn recliners β€” used to help babies sleep β€” sold at stores like Target, Walmart, and Amazon were recalled.

But thousands are still listed for sale on Facebook Marketplace and other websites, said the Colorado-based manufacturer, which continues to put babies at risk.

Children can suffocate in the lounge chairs if they roll over, move or are placed in a position that restricts their breathing.

Health officials said babies should sleep on their backs on a firm, flat surface such as in a crib.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and manufacturer The Boppy Company issued a warning on Tuesday.

Of the new fatalities, one infant suffocated after rolling off the lounger and rolling under a pillow belonging to a nearby adult.

The second died after being placed on the lounger while sitting on an adult bed surrounded by soft bedding.

The deaths occurred in October and November 2021 respectively, up to two months after the recall notice was first released.

“Until this sale is halted, infants remain at risk of death,” agency commissioner Richard Trumka said in a statement.

He warned that Meta – the owner of Facebook – had “taken no effective action” to remove the thousands of recalled reclining chairs for sale on its website.

In September 2021, millions of Boppy newborn loungers were recalled.

These were the Boppy Original newborn loungers, Boppy Preferred newborn loungers and Pottery Barn Kids Boppy newborn loungers.

The recall was triggered after eight child deaths were linked to the sun loungers between 2015 and 2020.

Babies are at risk of suffocation on the mats if they roll over, move around, or are placed on them in a position that restricts their breathing.

The Boppy company has offered a full refund on all products, but says it continued to see the recalled items for sale on Facebook and other online marketplaces.

The company made “numerous requests” for the platforms to have the sun loungers removed, but said the products “remain for sale on their sites.”

The CPSC said the best place for a baby to sleep is still a firm, flat surface in a crib, bassinet or play area.

The agency warns that parents or caregivers should never add blankets, pillows, padded crib bumpers or other items to a baby’s sleeping environment.

Young pigeons should also always be placed on their backs to sleep.

A spokeswoman for Meta said: β€œLike other platforms where people can buy and sell goods, there are instances where people knowingly or unknowingly sell recalled goods on Marktplaats.

“We take this issue seriously and if we find ads that violate our rules, we’ll remove them.”
