Two men have died and a child is in hospital after a head-on collision on the Bruce Highway.

About 8 a.m., a white Hyundai hatchback was traveling south on the Bruce Highway near Talia Lane and a white Volkswagen van was traveling north when they collided.

“The passenger of the Volkswagen, an 11-year-old boy from Buddina, was injured and airlifted to Sunshine Coast University Hospital.”

It is the second fatality on Queensland roads in 2025, after a 55-year-old man was killed when his car left the road 45 minutes west of Bundaberg on January 1.

In 2024, Queenslanders suffered their worst year for road fatalities in fifteen years, with 302 deaths.

Inspector Algie said the three deaths in as many days in 2025 was a shocking start to the year.

“This is a number we didn’t want to see, it’s a very, very worrying statistic,” he said.

“These are three people who are not sitting at the table with their loved ones at home because they just got into their car, drove on the highway and met their fate under a horrific set of circumstances.”

The crash caused traffic chaos over the holidays after the Bruce Highway was closed in both directions for five hours.

It opened shortly before 3 p.m.

Police are calling on anyone who may have witnessed the crash, or who may have a relevant dashcam view, to come forward.

The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.
