Two Irish tourists, aged 59 and 60, have been run over and killed in a horrific car accident in Rome.

The two victims were walking across a zebra crossing in the southern suburbs of the Italian capital when they were hit by a car and were reportedly thrown several meters by the impact this afternoon, the Italian newspaper reported. La Stampa.

The shocked driver, 54, of the Ford Fiesta reportedly got out of the car and administered first aid to the Irish victims before medics arrived on scene.

The driver, whose name has not been released, was also injured in the crash and was taken to nearby Sant’Eugenio Hospital.

The fatal accident occurred today at 12:50 p.m. near the presidential estate of Castel Porziano, near a campsite.

Police are now investigating the matter and are investigating whether the motorist ran a red light when he hit the two Irish tourists.
