Four dead and dozens more injured after building collapses at Majorcan beach resort

  • Four dead and seven in critical condition after partial building collapse in Spain

Four people have been killed and dozens injured after a building collapsed in a Mallorca seaside resort this evening.

About a hundred emergency workers, including police and fire brigades, rushed to the scene of the incident, locally identified as a terrace at a beach bar in Playa de Palma, the Medusa Beach Club.

The first floor of the two-story building collapsed “down to the basement,” local media reported, causing destruction inside the building and injuring many more.

As many as ten people are believed to still be trapped in the rubble as desperate rescue operations continue.

“The number of dead now stands at four and the number of injured at 27, with more people possibly trapped under the rubble,” a well-placed source said.

Local authorities also said one person was seriously injured in the collapse, without providing further information on the identities of those affected.

Local media reported that several tourists had tried to enter the property because they suspected friends were inside.

At least four people are believed to have been killed, with dozens injured in the massacre

According to Catalan news channel Rac 1, the floor collapsed around 8.45pm local time (7.45am BST) on Thursday.

Authorities were forced to call a crane company to help lift debris from the two-story building, while the extent of casualties was still unknown.

One of the murdered people is named locally as Abdoulaye Diop, a Senegalese migrant living in Mallorca and working as a nightclub doorman who in 2017 saved a man who was drowning in the sea at Playa de Palma.

Footage from the scene showed rescue operations underway in the dark, with teams treating the injured on the doorstep of the site.

Several fire engines were on scene to assist and ladders were lowered to provide access to the building.

Authorities have also called on psychologists from the Official College of Psychology of the Balearic Islands to help as traumatized victims are pulled from the wreckage.

The injured are currently being evacuated through the back of the restaurant, opposite Trasimé Street.

A spokesperson for a regional emergency coordination center said: “We have activated an emergency response following the collapse of the ceiling of a two-storey building on Avenida Cartago in Playa de Palma, where people are trapped.”
