Two people are dead and another is fighting for his life. They died in a horror accident in which several vehicles closed a major city tunnel for hours.

The pile-up occurred shortly after 3pm on Wednesday in the northbound lanes of Brisbane’s Legacy Way Tunnel.

A black Audi S3 traveling north in the tunnel at Mount Coot-Tha collided with a silver sedan, which then crashed into a truck.

The Audi driver in his 50s and a female passenger in her 20s who were driving the sedan died at the scene.

The female sedan driver was taken to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Children’s Hospital in a critical condition.

The truck driver was also taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Harrowing photos of the crash show the mangled wrecks of the Audi and sedan.

One of the vehicles sat in a crumpled heap next to a concrete barrier, with various parts of the exterior dangling from the side.

An exhaust pipe separated from the rear of the vehicle was among several parts of the car’s interior visible from the accident scene.

Debris from the vehicle wreckage was scattered several meters in the tunnel.

Forensic crash investigators spent the night examining the scene.

It is not known whether speed played a role in the accident.

Queensland Police Service Acting Inspector Stephen Crabbe described the crash scene as ‘extensive’

“Police are appealing for information regarding a black Audi s3 believed to have been traveling north on the Centenary Motorway through the Legacy Way tunnel,” he told reporters on Wednesday evening.

An Audi and a sedan were completely destroyed in the crash that claimed two lives

The Legacy Way Tunnel connects the Western Freeway at Toowong in the east of the city to the inner north.

The eastbound and westbound lanes were closed for several hours overnight as commuters headed home from work, causing massive delays.

The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information is asked to contact police.
