Two dead after car crash and burst into flames, trapping driver and passenger inside, during a police chase on Sydney’s M4 motorway, causing significant traffic delays for thousands of commuters this morning.
Two people have died after a car involved in an overnight police chase crashed and caught fire, causing chaos among early-morning passengers.
Highway patrol officers were patrolling Centenary Drive, Strathfield, Sydney’s inner-west, at around 12:30am on Tuesday, when they tried to stop the driver of a silver Audi.
Police launched a pursuit when the driver failed to stop as directed prior to the Audi crashed on the southbound onramp at Homebush.
The dramatic vision shows the overturned vehicle rolling on its roof engulfed in flames.
Police and bypassing motorists attempted to rescue the trapped occupants from the rubble, but were unsuccessful.
After Fire and Rescue NSW extinguished the fire, two bodies were found in the vehicle. They have not yet been formally identified.
A critical incident team will now investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The accident has caused traffic chaos for morning commuters on the M4 with one of the three westbound lanes closed at Homebush Bay Dr due to a fatal car crash.
There is no access from Homebush Bay Dr to travel west on the freeway. Use an alternate route instead,” Syd Traffic tweeted.
The investigation will be subject to independent review.
