The bodies of a baby and a child have been discovered in a home in what police say is a grisly double homicide.

A homicide investigation into the deaths of the one-year-old and four-year-old has been launched and detectives are now speaking with a woman, 1News reported.

“Our investigation is still in its early stages and we are currently speaking to an individual as part of our investigation,” Detective Bridget Doell said.

“There will be an increased police presence in the area and we will provide further updates as our investigation progresses.”

Local news outlet Stuff reports that the home was managed by Kainga Ora, New Zealand’s social housing company.

Kāinga Ora Regional Director for Northland, Jeff Murray, said in a statement this morning, “Our thoughts are with the whānau and with the small Ruakākā community who will all feel the effects of this tragedy.”

‘We visit our customers in the area to see what kind of support they need.

“Due to the ongoing police investigation, we are unable to comment further.”

“We are aware of the sad loss of two children in Ruakākā this morning,” director Shirley Winters wrote on Facebook.

“Our sincere aroha and thoughts are with the whānau and all concerned. We have support systems for all our tamariki that need it.’
