Two quick-thinking boys have been praised for their “incredible actions” after watching the alleged kidnapping of a five-year-old boy and calling the police.

Police allege the boy was abducted by his stepfather, 37, and a woman, 56, from Witherden Street in Nakara, in the northern suburbs of Darwin, on Friday afternoon.

The child’s mother tried to prevent the alleged kidnapping as they put him in a vehicle, but he fell onto the road.

The mother was taken to Royal Darwin Hospital and was later reported to be in a stable condition and expected to make a full recovery.

Northern Territory Police said a boy and girl who saw the incident called 000 and were given details of the suspected kidnappers’ vehicle, including its registration.

This information helped officers from the Sex Crimes Division, Strike Force Trident, Adelaide River, Batchelor and other general functions to quickly respond to the incident.

After a chase that lasted two and a half hours, the vehicle was stopped on Cox Peninsula Road, south of Darwin.

The five-year-old boy was found safe and taken back to his family.

The man and woman, known to the boy, were arrested at the scene and taken into custody.

NT police said detectives with the Child Abuse Task Force charged them Sunday with abducting a child under the age of 16 and recklessly endangering serious harm.

Both were sent to appear in Darwin Local Court on Monday.

Detective Sergeant Major Scott Russell said the boy and girl’s quick thinking was commendable.

“Not only did they contact the police while the (alleged) hijacking was taking place, but they also passed on the details and registration of the vehicle,” he said.

“This information was vital in allowing our officers to quickly begin tracking the vehicle, resulting in a positive result.”
