Two British men have been arrested after allegedly attempting to run from a Spanish bar where they scooped up a nearly £2,000 champagne bill.

Police sources quoted by Spanish media said the men, aged 49 and 52, shouted “We’re millionaires” before offering to invite other revelers, including several beautiful women, to about 90 glasses of champagne and telling staff they would pay .

They allegedly tried to leave the nightclub called Commo in Madrid at around 3am yesterday morning without paying a €2,200 (£1,930) bill they owed.

The bar staff would have left them with the high bill because they had previously paid a bill of € 1,000 (£ 880).

Police were called after the men reportedly refused to hand over any more money and “began displaying a violent attitude” and were arrested on suspicion of fraud.

It was not immediately clear on Thursday whether the outstanding drink bill has now been settled and whether the men, initially described as pensioners aged 71 and 73, have appeared in court.

Local media speculate that the British may have been Liverpool supporters who traveled to the Spanish capital last night for the Premier League side’s Champions League match against Real Madrid.

Jurgen Klopp’s men lost 1-0 in a lackluster performance after failing to reverse a shock 5-2 home defeat in the first leg at Anfield.

Commo, in Madrid’s Sol neighborhood in the city center, is described online as a “bustling bar serving shots, house cocktails and jugs of sangria.”

The website says 600 shots are on offer, including blended whiskey shots for €3 (£2.65)

The bar, which is sometimes described as a disco because of its DJ sets, although it’s generally referred to as a place to party before going to a nightclub, sells VIP bachelorette tickets for €49 (£43).

A Tripadvisor article states: ‘You can’t leave Madrid without a visit. A great place with a good atmosphere and the staff are great.’

Another visitor from the UK added: ‘Love this place. I’m from London and I’ll be back. I advise it. The waitress named Sandra is excellent.’

A spokesman for the National Police in Madrid has confirmed the arrests of two British men. They said: ‘Officers arrested two British men, aged 52 and 49, after being called to a bar in the Sol district of Madrid, which they allegedly tried to leave without paying.

“They told the bar staff not to worry as they were millionaires and insisted they come back later to pay the bill.

‘They had paid a first bill of around 1,000 euros, but had not paid a second bill of around 2,200 euros.

“Looks like they invited other people into the bar for a drink and especially other women. The drinks that were consumed but not paid for were a variety of drinks but did include about 90 glasses of champagne.

‘The men in question are said to have even become a bit violent in their attitude towards the bar staff when they were told they could not leave without paying.

“They were arrested on suspicion of fraud and handed over to the court on Wednesday to decide what further steps to take.”

The night bar where the arrests took place was closed this morning and no one could be reached for comment.

Police sources said they could not confirm whether the two men had traveled to the Spanish capital on Wednesday night to watch Liverpool’s Champions League match against Real Madrid, as Spanish media have speculated.
