Twisters storms to the top of the box office with $80.5 million in ticket sales – but Deadpool & Wolverine looms like a dark cloud on the horizon as it prepares to hit theatres next week
Twisters took theaters by storm this past weekend, grossing an estimated $80.5 million in its debut.
The action film starring Glen Powell, Daisy Edgar-Jones and Anthony Ramos has opened in more than 4,100 theaters in the US, according to DeNumbers.com.
The box office exceeded expectations, grossing $30 million more than forecast, making it the biggest live-action film premiere this summer so far.
“We had big ambitions for it, and it has certainly exceeded those,” Jim Orr, head of distribution at Universal Studios, told ABC News.
“We are seriously over-indexing between coasts, and that’s also funny to see.”

The blockbuster has already opened in several international markets and has grossed $574.4 million worldwide, far exceeding the film’s $155 million budget.
The film received a lukewarm 78 percent review score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, but audiences loved the thrilling adventure that focuses on a hot team of storm chasers.
Although the project did not feature any returning characters from 1996’s Twister, which starred Helen Hunt and the late Bill Paxton, its box office grosses seemed to reflect audiences’ love for the now-classic film.
Twister’s run at the top of the box office may be short-lived. Next Friday, the film will face stiff competition from the release of Deadpool & Wolverine.

The animated films Despicable Me 4 and Inside Out 2 continued to perform well at the box office.
Despicable Me 4, starring the voices of Steve Carrell and Kristen Wiig, fell to second place after two weeks at number one, grossing $23.8 million.
Inside Out 2 remained at number three, grossing $12.8 million.

A Quiet Place: Day One rounded out the top five with $6.1 million.

Fly Me to the Moon, starring Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum, dropped to sixth place, grossing $3.3 million in its second week in theaters.
Bad Boys: Ride or Die was #7 in its seventh week in theaters with $2.67 million. Worldwide grosses for the latest film in the popular franchise currently stand at $388 million.
MaXXXine continued to lure fans to the theaters. The gory horror film starring Mia Got as a murderous Hollywood star grossed $819,242 for the weekend and was ranked eighth.
The Bikeriders finished in ninth place with around $700,000 and the top ten was completed by Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga Chapter 1 with $685,000.
