‘I was taking growth hormones; I’m still working on those things. My body has not withstood the change on its own.’

Max said the process helped him finally reach puberty in his late twenties.

He explained: ‘I have had a malfunctioning pituitary gland since birth and had to jump-start my puberty by pumping myself up with testosterone and growth hormones to help me grow, because it didn’t happen. I was 25 and hadn’t even shaved yet.’

Undoubtedly, his condition made it difficult to maintain his Hollywood career with his signature role coming from starring in the highly popular series Doogie Howser, MD from 1989 to 1993.

Max got candid when he said, “It was a horror show. I couldn’t talk about it. Nobody understood.

“It’s like the trans community is talking about body dysmorphism these days and feeling like, ‘I’m in the wrong body,’ absolutely my experience. Absolute. I was a man who spent most of my twenties trapped in a little boy’s body until they finally pumped me full of testosterone.”

Regardless, the talented actor has maintained a successful Hollywood career, as he starred in more than 100 projects.

Max explained to Page Six, ‘I had his poster on my wall when I was 10 years old, and now I’m acting with him? It’s surreal.

“I’ve played with a lot of big stars: Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Johnny Depp. Sometimes it’s up or down, your experience with them, but none like Sly, who was such a superhero to my 10-year-old self. This was like my childhood dream.’
