Tugan, Gold Coast: Woman dies after she was allegedly struck down by a drink driver

A man has been charged with driving under the influence after allegedly hitting an elderly pedestrian, who later died in hospital.

Police allege the man was driving a black Mazda hatchback in the Gold Coast town of Tugun when he struck the 83-year-old woman on Saturday evening.

The 30-year-old reportedly left the scene but was found by police in his car outside a house in Currumbin, a short distance from the crash.

The pedestrian, who was visiting from overseas, was rushed to Gold Coast University Hospital in a critical condition and died on Sunday evening.

The Currumbin man has been charged with drink driving and will appear in the Coolangatta Magistrates Court on March 25.

Police are calling on anyone with more information about the accident to come forward.
