  • AFL legend is surprised Rowell didn’t get sick
  • Sun’s club is dissatisfied that the clip has gone viral

Cameras captured Gold Coast Suns star Matt Rowell eating stadium grass in a bizarre pre-game ritual over the weekend – and the club is unimpressed that the strange clip has gone viral.

Footage captured before the Suns game against the Demons showed the star midfielder getting a hold of crouch down, grab a handful of grass from the Heritage Bank Stadium and eat it.

The moment made headlines across the country — and sportswriter Caroline Wilson has now revealed it’s far from a one-off for Rowell.

“He does this at every game, on every ground across Australia,” she said on Nine’s Footy classified on Monday night.

“So we think he’s probably been eating grass at about 18 locations now. I’m not kidding, that’s his pre-game routine – he eats grass. It’s something extraordinary.’

“And I think the club is a little disappointed that the vision came true – they were hoping it wouldn’t be released.”

Former Port Adelaide star Kane Cornes said he was surprised the Suns thought the footage could be kept quiet.

“I feel like there’s a potential to go ahead and call it weird,” he said.

“But for them to think that footage isn’t coming out, if he’s doing it every game, that’s a little odd.”

Essendon legend Matthew Lloyd admitted to having some strange pre-game rituals of his own, but he never ate on grass.

“It’s very strange,” he said.

“I’m surprised it hasn’t gotten him sick yet.”

Footy fans on social media had a field day with the video as they commented on Rowell’s weird habit.

“Scientific fact that GOATS eat grass,” said one Reddit user, referring to the acronym for the best of all time.

“We already know the dude lives and breathes footy, but it makes sense that he eats it too,” replied another.

“Some eat grass, some smoke it. I’m not here to judge,” joked a third.
