‘Trump will lose to Biden’: Republican Senator Bill Cassidy warns ex-President will be defeated in 2024 if he wins GOP nomination and will mean four more years of Democratic administration
- Republican Senator Bill Cassidy suggested on Sunday that former President Donald Trump should drop out of the 2024 presidential race
- Cassidy voted to convict Trump after he was impeached for inciting an insurrection after January 6
- He said on Sunday that the classified documents case was “almost a slam dunk” and that Trump “would lose to Joe Biden” if he becomes the GOP nominee
Republican Senator Bill Cassidy said on Sunday that former President Donald Trump should drop out of the 2024 presidential race because he will lose to President Joe Biden.
Appearing on CNN’s State of the Union, Cassidy said he believed the federal case against Trump’s mishandling of classified documents was “almost a bull’s-eye” and did not believe “Americans will vote for someone who has been convicted.”
The Louisiana legislator was then asked by the network’s Kasie Hunt if Trump should drop out of the race and answered in the affirmative.
‘I think so. But that’s up to him, of course,” Cassidy replied. “I mean, you’re just asking my opinion. But he will lose to Joe Biden, if you look at the current polls.”
Cassidy was previously critical of Trump and was one of seven GOP senators to split with his party and vote to convict the ex-president when he was impeached for inciting an insurrection.

On CNN, Cassidy added that as a Republican, he believes “any Republican on that podium in Milwaukee” will outperform Biden.
Milwaukee will host the first GOP primary debate on Wednesday, which Trump is expected to skip.
“And so I want one of them to win,” Cassidy continued. “If former President Trump eventually gets the nomination, but can’t win a general, that means we’ll have four more years of policies that have led to very high inflation, to a loss of purchasing power for the average American, equivalent to $10,000, and many other things which I think have been detrimental to the future of our country.’
Cassidy said he would still vote for Trump instead of Biden, or any other Democrat on the ticket.
Biden, 80, announced his re-election bid in April.
“I’m going to vote Republican,” Cassidy told Hunt. “But my threshold problem for anyone who wants to be the leader of our country is, are you handling the problems ahead?”
The Republican from Louisiana used Social Security as an example, saying “both Biden and Trump, for example, have the same Social Security policies, which is to do nothing.”
Cassidy said “at least” some of the other GOP candidates are talking about the issue.
‘To be honest, I have a different approach than them. But at least they’re talking about it,” he noted.
Cassidy didn’t immediately answer a question about whether Trump skipping the first debate will ultimately be a mistake.
He did say to Hunt, “Oh, I think the debate matters.”
Cassidy was referring to something that former Arkansas governor Asa Hutchinson, one of Trump’s rivals in 2024, had said shortly before on CNN’s State of the Union.
That Trump may not even be “qualified to be the next President of the United States” due to violating the 14th Amendment.
“A number of legal experts said he has been disqualified for his actions on January 6,” Hutchinson told Hunt.
Cassidy called Hutchinson a “great guy,” noting that he said “some lawyers think he’s going to be disqualified on the 14th Amendment.”
“I’m not sure if that’s true, but I’m not a lawyer — which means the people you see on that stage, one of them, will very likely be the presidential candidate,” Cassidy said.
“And I think any of them will be better than Joe Biden,” he continued. “So if you’re concerned about the future of our country, watch that debate, find your candidate, support that candidate,” Cassidy instructed.
