Trump takes narrow lead in NYT poll amid fears Kamala’s ‘honeymoon’ is collapsing
- Polls from late July to early September remain largely unchanged
- Results suggest Trump’s support remains strong as Harris’ ‘honeymoon’ fades
With just two months to go until Election Day, Kamala Harris and Donald Trump enter the final stretch with a negligible lead in the polls.
But despite the small difference, the results show a shift toward the former president after Harris entered the race in late July.
Only two days left until the first presidential debate, a New York Times/Siena College poll puts Trump ahead of the vice president by 1 point — 48 percent to 47 percent — within the poll’s 3-point margin of error.
The latest poll was conducted Sept. 3-6 and is largely unchanged from the same national poll of likely voters conducted in late July, after President Joe Biden ended his re-election campaign and endorsed No. 2.
Interestingly, polls indicate that despite Harris’ “honeymoon phase,” support for Trump’s candidacy for a second, non-consecutive term in the White House remains strong.

The national results largely mirror how Americans feel in the seven swing states that are crucial to winning the 2024 election.
In Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, Trump and Harris’s preference is still within the margin of error of likely voters. In some states, the votes are even tied.
Trump and Harris are neck and neck in Arizona, Georgia, Nevada and North Carolina with 48 percent each.
Harris then narrowly leads Pennsylvania by 1 point and 2 points ahead of fellow rust belt contenders Michigan and Wisconsin.
Overall, the latest results show a close race, with the outcome still depending on the most experienced political scientists, pollsters and experts in the final stretch of the election.
On Tuesday, September 10, Harris and Trump will meet on stage in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for a debate hosted by ABC News. It will be their first face-to-face.
Support for Donald Trump remains strong in national polls
But if we break it down into the swing states, Trump is tied with Harris or the vice president has a one- or two-point lead.
Biden’s debate with Trump in late June ultimately proved to be the catalyst for the president’s downfall in the 2024 election. The disastrous performance sparked a wave of calls within the Democratic Party to oust him and let Harris take over.
There are just eight weeks left until Election Day on November 5 in the shortest presidential race in modern US history, after Harris entered the race on July 21.
Many MAGA supporters and Republicans argue that Harris’ polling and enthusiasm are part of a honeymoon phase and expect it to fade before voters cast their ballots. But in some states, mail ballots are already being sent to voters for early and absentee voting.
