Donald Trump has been officially informed that he is the target of a criminal investigation into his handling of classified documents, according to multiple reports on Wednesday night.
The Justice Department told Trump’s lawyers in a letter several days ago: Politics reported — though Trump himself wrote on Truth Social that he was uninformed.
Two sources told Fox news that the lawyers had been informed.
The formal notice is seen as a sign that Jack Smith, the special counsel assigned to investigate Trump’s handling of classified documents, is close to a decision on whether or not to recommend charges against him.
Trump’s lawyers met with Smith’s team on Monday.

The Justice Department manual states that prosecutors may send a “letter of purpose” to those likely to be charged in connection with a grand jury investigation.
The move is intended to give them a chance to testify before charges are brought. It is not a guarantee that a report will be filed.
Prosecutors consider as a target an individual for whom there is “substantial evidence linking him or her to the commission of a crime and who, in the opinion of the prosecution, is an alleged defendant.”
Trump denied he was told he was a target.
He wrote on Truth Social, “Nobody told me I’m being charged, and I shouldn’t be, because I’ve done NOTHING wrong, but I’ve assumed for years I’m a target of the WEAPONIZED DOJ & FBI. starting with the Russia, Russia, Russia HOAX, the ‘No Collusion’ Mueller Report, Impeachment HOAX, Impeachment HOAX, the PERFECT phone call to Ukraine and several other SCAMS & WITCH HUNTS.
