Trump named Time magazine ‘Person of the Year’

Newly elected President Donald Trump has been named Time Magazine’s ‘Person of the Year 2024’.

The magazine made its annual announcement early Thursday after releasing its shortlist on Monday.

To mark the occasion, the president-elect will head to Wall Street on Thursday morning to ring the opening bell of the New York Stock Exchange.

This is the second time the 78-year-old has been named Person of the Year, having also received the title in 2016 following his first victory in the presidential election.

It comes after Trump dominated headlines this year with his third bid for the White House and decisive victory last month.

The president-elect also survived an assassination attempt in July and in May became the first US president to be convicted of a crime.

Every year since 1927, the magazine has named a person, group or concept that has had the “greatest impact – for good or ill – on the world in the past twelve months.”

Earlier this week, Time published its shortlist of potential candidates, including Trump and nine others.

Kamala Harris, Elon Musk, Princess Kate Middleton, Jerome Powell, Claudia Sheinbaum, Yulia Navalnaya, Joe Rogan, Benjamin Netanyahu and Mark Zuckerberg were also considered for the title.

Trump joins thirteen other US presidents to have been named Person of the Year, including most recently President Biden who received the title in 2020.

Besides Trump, seven of those presidents have been named Time’s Person of the Year more than once.

Leading up to the big reveal, Time has released a series of other titles for different categories.

Singer Elton John was named Time’s Icon of the Year, Caitlin Clark of the WNBA was named Athlete of the Year and Lisa Su of Advanced Micro Devices was named CEO of the Year.

Last year, megastar Taylor Swift was named Person of the Year 2023, in the midst of her global Eras tour and the release of another chart-topping album. She posed with her cat on the cover of the magazine.

Trump has long been obsessed with being on the cover of Time Magazine and has run for Person of the Year in the past.

In 2017, he wrote in a post that the magazine called to say he was “probably” going to be Person of the Year, but that he “didn’t make it.” Time Magazine disputed his claim as “inaccurate.”

A framed copy of Time magazine with Trump from 2009 that hung in at least five of President Trump’s clubs was fake, The Washington Post also reported in 2017.

In a series of posts over the years, Trump has on some occasions celebrated being on the cover of Time, while on other occasions criticized the magazine for its reporting.

In 2012, Trump argued that Time had lost all its credibility when it failed to include him in its Top 100 Most Influential People.

More recently, in addition to Swift, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, ‘The Spirit of Ukraine’ and Elon Musk received the title.

As the magazine nears its 100th anniversary, it has named Person of the Year to a range of American and global leaders, entertainers, scholars and movements over the past nine decades.

While the title has gone to U.S. presidents, celebrated entertainers and dignitaries from Presidents Obama and Reagan to Queen Elizabeth, not all Persons of the Year have received the title due to positive reporting.

Adolf Hitler received the title in 1938, Joseph Stalin was also mentioned twice by the magazine.

The American president to have received this title most often to date was President Franklin Roosevelt, who was named Person (then Man) of the Year in 1932, 1934 and 1941.
