New Hampshire’s Republican governor, Chris Sununu, scoffed at the idea that former President Donald Trump’s re-election would be a danger to democracy.

Sununu headlined a Thursday night event at the Texas Tribune Festival in Austin.

Earlier this year, Sununu decided not to run for president — even though he is helping Trump’s Republican competitors gain a foothold in the all-important Granite State — and in July he announced he would not run for fifth term.

“Trump is too stupid to be a danger to democracy,” Sununu said, drawing laughter from the audience. “Let’s not give him so much credit.”

During his nearly hour-long appearance, Sununu was also booed when he said the decision on abortion was “up to the states.”

New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu, who decided not to run for president and will not run for re-election, said Thursday that former President Donald Trump is “too stupid to be a danger to democracy ‘

“Roe v. Wade was overturned. The states decide,” he said as he was heckled by the crowd.

Sununu warned against a federal abortion law, saying it would change depending on the makeup of Congress and which party controls the White House.

“That’s not the answer, because you’re going to have a ping-pong ball of abortion going back and forth forever,” the New Hampshire moderate said. ‘No side will ever win.’

Moderator Evan Smith, co-founder and senior advisor of The Texas Tribune, pointed out to Sununu that “Democrats have won every election since Dobbs” — the decision that overturned Roe v. Wade.

Smith suggested it was “not a good thing” for Republicans to play a role in the next election cycle.

Sununu agreed.

‘There’s no doubt. Absolute. So take it out of federal hands,” the governor said.

Sununu — who opposes Trump but wouldn’t go so far as to say he wouldn’t vote for him in the 2024 general election — painted a rosy picture of how the Republican Party’s primaries would go.

“I just want you to relax, it’s all going to be okay,” Sununu said.

Sununu noted how the country had endured a civil war, McCarthyism, 1968 – the year Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy were assassinated – and the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

“January 6, a terrible day in American history, but do you know what happened that afternoon? They certified the elections. And you know what we had, like we always had? A peaceful transfer of power,” Sununu said.

In what he said next, Sununu said he was quoting a former Republican governor of Texas — which should be either Rick Perry or George W. Bush.

“A**hole leaders may come and go, but our institutions stand strong,” Sununu said.

‘Really and truly. We have a great system here in this country. And believe in that. Be optimistic about that. And one day there will be no Trump, there will be no Biden, there will be no Chris Sununu – we will get through this,” he continued.

Sununu said the way the Republican Party can manage Trump is for his opponents to know the right time to drop out of the 2024 race — “hopefully before Super Tuesday,” the New Hampshire governor advised.

“The candidates need the discipline and responsibility to get out,” Sununu said. ‘Because he loses one-on-one, there’s no doubt about that. In a one-to-one vote he will not retain 50 percent of the vote.”

“I guess you could think of it this way: If seven or eight candidates have the discipline to get out, he’s toast,” Sununu added.
