Emmer's announcement came a day after House Majority Leader Steve Scalise of Louisiana gave his own nod to Trump, and days before the Iowa caucuses kicked off the 2024 election process.
“The Democrats have made it clear that they will use every tool in their arsenal to keep Joe Biden and his failed policies in power. We cannot allow them. It's time for Republicans to rally behind the clear frontrunner of our party, and that's why I'm proud to support Donald J. Trump for president,” Emmer wrote on X.

The Minnesota Republican had a shot at the top job in October after the failed attempts of Scalise and Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio). He was immediately criticized for not being sufficiently pro-Trump at a conference where MAGA was gaining a foothold. He voted to certify Joe Biden's 2020 election victory and voted for a measure to raise the debt ceiling and fund the government.
Trump posted that he was a “RINO” – a Republican in name only. He also labeled him a “globalist” and someone who “never respected the power of a Trump endorsement.” Trump also called him “out of touch” and associated him with “squad” member Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.).
The attack helped end his bid for speaker just hours after Emmer prevailed over eight other Republicans in a closed-door vote.
Emmer's support for the former president, who leads his closest rival by 50 points in the polling averages, puts him on par with the rest of the House leadership.
