Former President Donald Trump’s campaign blasted Vice President Kamala Harris for trying to cancel Columbus Day, which is recognized as a federal holiday on Monday.
Old video clips of Harris promising to abolish Columbus Day resurfaced Monday as social media users reacted to her controversial proposal.
Harris supported the idea of a federal government effort to change Columbus Day to “Indigenous Peoples’ Day” in response to an activist’s question at a New Hampshire town hall in 2019.
‘Sure, sure. Yes,” Harris replied. “And why it matters is exactly what you’re saying: we need to remember history… we need to remember our history, uncomfortable, to your point about truths, even though it may make us.”
Harris applauded the effort to address the “remnants of all that damage.”

As vice president, Kamala Harris recognized Indigenous Peoples Day during an address to the 78th annual convention of the National Congress of American Indians in October 2021.
She pointed out the entire “truth” behind the “explorers” who came to America from Europe.

“These explorers ushered in a wave of destruction for tribal nations who committed violence, stole land and spread disease,” she said.
“We must not shy away from this shameful past and we must shed light on it and do everything we can to address the impact of the past on indigenous communities today.”
Harris has also made emphatic statements on social media and from the White House recognizing Indigenous Peoples Day, but not Columbus Day.
Trump’s campaign responded to the segments by reminding voters that Harris was a “stereotypical leftist.”

“She doesn’t just want to raise taxes and defund the police — she also wants to cancel American traditions like Columbus Day,” Karoline Leavitt, national press secretary for the Trump campaign, said in a statement to DailyMail.com.
“President Trump will ensure that the great legacy of Christopher Columbus is honored and protect this holiday from radical leftists who want to erase our country’s history, like Kamala Harris,” she concluded.
