Donald Trump said Hamas’ bloody attack on Israel was an ‘act of cruelty that must be crushed’ and blamed Joe Biden for being a weak and ineffective leader.
During his presidential rally in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on Saturday, the former president condemned the attacks and used it as an opportunity to hit his political rival again.
“The terrorist invasion of Israeli territory and the killing of Israeli soldiers and civilians is an act of cruelty that must, and will, be crushed and avenged,” he said.
“As president, I will stand with Israel again and we will cut off the money to Palestinian terrorists on day one,” he told the cheering crowd.
The Republican said at another rally in Waterloo, Iowa, that Democrat Biden has made the US look weak on the world stage.
“The Israeli attack was made because we are perceived as weak and ineffective and with a very weak leader,” he said.
‘It was a huge attack with lots of dead people everywhere. Who would think that? And the only difference, I believe, is the difference between one president and another president.’
Hamas militants launched a surprise attack on Israel on Saturday, striking by land, air and sea.
The attacks killed more than 300 and injured 1,590 in just the first 24 hours.
“This is our 9/11,” Israeli ambassador to the UN, Gilad Erdan, said in an appearance on Fox News on Saturday. “Babies, women, the elderly were dragged outside their homes, taken hostage.”
“These animals will pay a heavy price and they will learn that these atrocities cannot be committed against our civilians again,” he said
Hamas, the de facto ruling authority of the Gaza Strip, claims to have fired 5,000 rockets into Israel, setting off air raid sirens in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem.
The coordinated attack saw border fences torn down, tanks immobilized, dozens of hostages allegedly taken and residential buildings targeted by airstrikes.
The killing of civilians drew widespread condemnation from world leaders and prompted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to say the country was at ‘war’.
Gunfights continued in the streets of Israel early Sunday, some 24 hours after the assault began.
Biden offered his “unwavering” support for Israel, saying it “has a right to defend itself and its people.”
“This is not a moment for any party hostile to Israel to exploit these attacks, to seek an advantage,” he said. ‘The world is watching’.
Biden spoke on the phone with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Saturday morning to offer American support.
The White House condemned the ‘unprovoked attacks’ against Israeli civilians and issued a strong statement on Saturday morning.
“The United States unequivocally condemns the unprovoked attacks by Hamas terrorists against Israeli civilians. There is never any justification for terrorism,” National Security Council spokeswoman Adrienne Watson said in the statement
