Donald Trump has claimed to be completely unaware of the growing controversy surrounding conspiracy theorist Laura Loomer, and has faced questions about why he allowed a woman who claimed 9/11 was an inside job to travel with him to the memorial services this week.
Despite her outlandish views, Loomer has become a regular at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago mansion. This week, she also made racist comments about Trump opponent Kamala Harris.
But during a news conference at his Los Angeles golf club overlooking the Pacific Ocean, Trump refused to criticize her.
“I have no control over Laura,” he said. “I can’t tell Laura what to do. She’s a supporter.”
Instead, he called her a “free spirit” and claimed to know nothing about a report in which his supporter said that “the White House will smell like curry and White House speeches will be routed through a call center” if Harris, the daughter of Indian and Jamaican immigrants, won the election.
Former President Donald Trump broke his silence on Laura Loomer during a press conference
Trump spoke to reporters for more than an hour, again railing against debate moderators, lashing out at California’s political leaders and taking aim at Haitian migrants.
But he received most of the questions about Loomer, a 31-year-old far-right activist.
Her presence on Trump’s private jet has alarmed many of the former president’s allies, who believe she is hurting his chances of winning new voters.
He brushed off questions about why she was on his plane this week to a 9/11 event in Pennsylvania and the anniversary of Flight 93, despite once saying the attack on the Twin Towers was an inside job.
“A lot of people do that,” he said. “It’s a very big plane.”
Instead, he claimed he knew nothing about her history of controversial comments, promising to read her remarks and issue a statement.
Loomer is so far removed from even fringe Republicans that people like Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, who has promoted her own conspiracy theories, have called her “extremely racist” for her curry comment.
Trump also took the opportunity to attack Harris, citing a number of statements his aides believed Harris would use during the debate.
He focused on her record in California, where she was attorney general and also served as San Francisco district attorney.

“She destroyed San Francisco and the state,” he said.
After the event at his golf club, he attends a fundraising event hosted by billionaire software developer Tom Siebel and his wife Stacey.
Tickets start at $3,000 and can go up to $500,000 for a couple on the host committee at the event in the Bay Area town of Woodside.
Trump is trying to catch up to Harris, who has had a huge fundraising spree since entering the race in late July.
The two are locked in a tight race, with DailyMail.com/JL Partners’ election model giving the former president a 55 percent chance of victory with less than two months to go.
Both candidates have been campaigning in the swing states since the debate and can say they had the best debate night.
Trump was in Arizona on Thursday and showed no sign of anger.
Trump held the news conference ahead of a fundraiser and rally in Las Vegas later Friday
“People said I was angry about the debate, angry,” he told a raucous crowd in Tucson.
“I was angry, and yes, I am angry because she let 21 million illegal aliens into our communities. Many of them are criminals.”
And he presented another populist economic measure: he promised to abolish the tax on overtime.
“You know what that means? I think it makes people more motivated to work,” he said.
‘It brings a lot to companies. It is much easier to find people.’
Critics will wonder how he plans to pay for that without increasing the national debt.
